Book Radiance (Wraith Kings Book 1) Review :

Found this book through a mention in another book's review and took a chance. The characters are what carry this book. Right from page one I fell in love with both MCs and seeing how their love story unfolds pulled me through the book. They were charming and lovely, amusing and kind-hearted. I enjoyed seeing how they would deal with the complications of their situations. That's the good part of this book. There isn't much of a real plot to this book. Things happen but none of it seems to be connected beyond the moment. The threads are there but they feel lost and underconnected to the story as a whole. Things are set-up here and there, but never paid off or paid-off in the most unsatisfying way. I can tell this author is character driven and not plot driven. This book could really use a developmental edit for the plot to pull some of these elements together a bit better. The end was particularly baffling as it was obviously set up very differently earlier in the book. In particular, it completely undercuts a character who could have had a much greater and more interesting impact on the story.I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys character-driven stories or classic Romance stories. I can say this book is definitely a romance novel that understands what makes a good love story. It avoids the major pitfalls, like the Great Misunderstanding and the Lust at first Sight tropes, which is a breath of fresh air. It does a good job of focussing on the very real feeling love that grows between the two and not interrupting that with the B-story. If you need a solid plotline aside from the romance, this might not be a good fit.
Radiance starts off enchanting and just a bit interesting, but never seems to catapult past “just a bit interesting.” The romance in the story is sweet but rather dull. The two leads never have conflict with one another. For a story about two races being forced to marry, there is little conflict to be had as one might expect from this sort of arrangement. Any complications the couple does face from the differences of their culture and race are met with little to no great adversity. The author spent more time having the characters agonize over their distaste for food than finding other culture clashes for the characters to overcome. And any cultural or physical clashes Ildiko and Brishen present to the other were quickly accepted with little fuss. At the outset, both are unattracted to another, which can be expected when two completely different fantasy races are forced to marry. Their marriage is arranged and the idea is worrisome to both, but despite this both readily wish to jump into the marriage based off a brief conversation they had before realizing who each other was. This is fine, possibly realistic in the sense that these two are trying to make the best of an arranged marriage by approaching their differences with cool heads and willing hearts. However, it doesn’t make for the most interesting reading. Just a little storminess at the beginning might help to keep the pages turning. However, there are sweet moments between the two, and the author does a great job of introducing a wholly unique, fantasy race in the Kai. It’s obvious Draven spent a lot of time devising this race. Reading about them was probably the most interesting part of the book. The prose is written well, but the story is a bit “too nice.” Most of the characters are “too nice” to each other. Which is fine, but doesn’t seem realistic. Ildiko is married to Brishen, yet there is no real conflict of her presence with his people aside from his mother’s outright distaste for her. Brishen’s cousin (I think) immediately accepts her. It might have been more interesting to have just a little wariness there, just to create some much-needed tension. This book is sweet and romantic and has elements of fantasy in the Kai race that make it interesting enough to finish to the end. Would I read it again? Probably not. Will it stick with me forever? Probably not. Maybe elements of the Kai will, they are quite interesting. But Ildiko is not so interesting. The romance is okay. It didn’t make me roll my eyes. Ildiko and Brishen aren’t the typical “jump in the sack” type characters seen in other romances where boinking each other precedes all other plot points. They have a more logical outlook on their situation. So, that I did respect and enjoy about the novel, but for some reason, I still came away feeling, “didn’t hate it, didn’t love it, it was just okay.” There is a sequel and I do plan to read it, but didn’t feel the need to “jump” and crack it open immediately after finishing this one. At some point, I will finish these character’s story, but the desire to is falling in the “when I get around to it area.” However, I see many four and five-star reviews, so there are other readers who got more out of the story than me. I recommend giving it a go and see what category you fall in.*On a different note. I started reading this novel and switched to the audiobook a few chapters in. The narrator does a very good reading of the book. So if you like audiobooks, this buy isn’t bad for the price.
